Coloured Contact Lenses — The Complete Beginner's Guide

What Are Coloured Contact Lenses?
Coloured contact lenses change or enhance the appearance of your eye colour. They can be purely cosmetic (with zero prescription — called plano lenses) or combined with your vision correction so you can see clearly and change your look at the same time.
Types of Coloured Lenses
Visibility Tints
A very light tint (usually blue or green) that makes the lens easier to see when dropped. These do not change your eye colour.
Enhancement Tints
A translucent tint that intensifies your natural eye colour. These work best on light-coloured eyes.
Opaque Tints
Fully coloured lenses that completely change your eye colour, regardless of your natural colour. These work on dark eyes too and are the most popular type for dramatic transformations. Brands like Bella, Color Vision, and FreshLook ColorBlends fall into this category.
Popular Coloured Lens Brands
- Bella (Saudi brand) — Extremely popular across the Gulf and India. Known for natural-looking designs with subtle limbal rings. Available in monthly lenses.
- Color Vision — Wide range of bold and natural colours. Popular for everyday and special occasion wear.
- FreshLook ColorBlends (Alcon) — Three-tone technology creates the most natural blend of colour. Available in 12 shades.
- Air Optix Colors (Alcon) — Monthly silicone hydrogel coloured lens with SmartShield technology. High breathability, natural look.
- Lacelle (Bausch+Lomb) — Designed for Asian eyes. Natural-looking limbal ring for a larger, brighter eye effect.
How to Choose a Colour
- For a natural look: Choose shades close to your own eye colour — hazel, light brown, grey-green. Three-tone lenses (FreshLook ColorBlends) blend beautifully.
- For a bold statement: Blue, violet, or bright green on dark eyes creates a striking contrast. Popular for events and photography.
- For dark eyes: You need opaque lenses. Enhancement tints will not show on brown or dark eyes.
Are Coloured Contact Lenses Safe?
Yes — when purchased from a reputable source and used correctly. Never buy coloured lenses from a costume shop, beauty salon, or unlicensed seller that sells them without a prescription requirement. Poor quality lenses from unregulated sources have been linked to serious eye infections and even vision loss.
Always buy from a licensed optical retailer. Even plano (zero power) coloured lenses are medical devices and require a valid prescription or at minimum a proper fitting measurement.
Care and Replacement
- Most coloured lenses are monthly — clean and store them in lens solution every night.
- Replace the entire lens case every 3 months.
- Remove before sleeping, swimming, or showering.
- Maximum recommended daily wearing time: 8–10 hours.
Can I Wear Coloured Lenses with a Prescription?
Yes. Brands like Bella, Air Optix Colors, and FreshLook ColorBlends are available in a range of SPH powers. If you have astigmatism, your choices are more limited — very few toric coloured lenses exist — speak to your eye doctor.
