Who Needs Computer Glasses in India?

With the average Indian office worker spending 8–10 hours a day in front of screens, digital eye strain has become one of the most common complaints seen by optometrists. If you regularly experience headaches, tired eyes, or blurry vision by end of the workday, computer glasses may offer genuine relief — but only if you choose the right type.

Types of Computer Glasses

1. Blue Light Filter Lenses

These have a coating that blocks a portion of blue light (400–500 nm wavelengths) from reaching the eye. The jury is still out on whether they significantly reduce eye strain — the science is mixed — but there is reasonable evidence they can improve sleep quality when worn in the evenings by reducing blue light exposure before bedtime.

2. Anti-Fatigue Lenses

These have a small reading-power addition (+0.50 to +1.25) built into the lower portion of the lens. This reduces the effort your eye muscles (ciliary muscles) must maintain to focus at screen distance for hours at a time. Most eye care professionals consider these more effective for reducing eye strain than blue-light filtering alone. Recommended especially for people aged 30 and above.

3. Computer Progressive Lenses

For people who already use progressive lenses, a computer-specific pair is optimised for intermediate (arm's length) and near distances rather than the wide distance zone of standard progressives. Significantly reduces neck strain from tilting to find the right zone.

4. Single Vision Computer Lenses

For those with a distance prescription, a separate pair of glasses optimised specifically for the 50–70 cm screen distance can provide cleaner, more relaxed vision than using distance or reading glasses for screen work.

Best Practices for Screen Work

  • 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Resets your focusing muscles.
  • Screen brightness: Match your screen brightness to the ambient light in the room. A screen that is much brighter or dimmer than your surroundings causes visual fatigue.
  • Night mode: Enable warm colour temperature on your phone and computer after 8 PM. This reduces blue light and melatonin disruption.
  • Screen distance: Keep your screen at arm's length (50–70 cm) and slightly below eye level.
  • Blink consciously: We blink 3x less when looking at screens. Dry eye is a major contributor to screen fatigue.

What to Ask Your Optometrist

If you are having significant screen-related eye strain, the most important first step is getting an up-to-date eye examination. An outdated or incorrect prescription is the most common cause — and no amount of blue-light filtering will fix that. Ask your optometrist specifically about:

  • Whether you need a separate computer prescription
  • Anti-fatigue lenses if you are 32+
  • Blue light coating as an add-on to any new lenses
