Anisometropia

Anisometropia is an eye condition where the two eyes have unequal focusing power, usually differing by one diopter or more. One eye might see clearly while the other is nearsighted, farsighted, or has astigmatism, causing the brain to receive two mismatched images.

Common Symptoms

Blurry vision in one eye

Eye strain and fatigue

Headaches, especially after reading or screen time

Poor depth perception or clumsiness

Squinting or closing one eye

Types of Anisometropia

Simple: One eye has normal vision, and the other has a refractive error.

Compound: Both eyes have the same type of error (like nearsightedness), but at different strengths.

Mixed: One eye is nearsighted, and the other is farsighted

Risks in Children

Amblyopia: The brain ignores the blurry image from the weaker eye. This can lead to a permanent "lazy eye" if left untreated in early childhood.

Hard to detect: Kids rarely complain because their stronger eye does all the work

Treatment Options

Glasses: Good for mild cases, though large prescription differences can make objects look uneven in size.

Contact lenses: Sit directly on the eye and reduce the size difference between images, making them a great choice for many patients.

Vision therapy or patching: Used alongside corrective lenses if a child is developing amblyopia.
